About me:

Hi,
My name is Jon and I retired three years ago from the infamous steel mill here in Pueblo, Colorado. I was really looking forward to my retirement because I wanted to actively pursue my woodworking hobbies.
As a youngster, I spent much of my time with my uncle, watching him build cabinets and his home. This sparked a real interest in woodworking. I did some woodworking when we built our home some 35 years ago. I framed the house, finished the interior and built all the cabinets.
Scroll sawing and doing intarsia is one of the hobbies I learned and I enjoyed it because it gave me the opportunity to use beautiful exotic woods. But after retiring I purchased a lathe, a chuck, some tools and a sharpening system. I knew nothing of turning so I attended a demonstration on turning and was given so much information in the three-hour course I could not remember anything by the time I got home. I did not know what he meant by "ride the bevel".
Later I met a person at a craft show who invited me to a woodturners meeting. This was great! I learned that the Pueblo Woodturners have monthly meetings with a workshop on the following Saturday. Right away I joined the club and the AAW. Members were willing to teach and show the proper and safe way of using and sharpening tools. I now know how to "ride the bevel". A demonstration was soon given on segmented bowl turning and I now have several segmented bowls! I saw a demonstration on candleholders, so not only do I have several in my home, I'm now selling them at craft shows! Pen and pencil turning? I now have over 200 pens! Some are made from exotic woods, acrylics, stabilized burl and even deer antler! I have made miniature birdhouses and learned to make and harden my own turning tools. I must admit the demonstration on turning a canteen was a little much. I do not have a canteen.
I am always looking forward to the next demonstration. It's been great and rewarding to me. I enjoy and love to turn at the lathe. If by chance you see a person at a craft show with four cases of pens stop by and say, "Hi".
